Reflect on what your peer’s shared (go beyond agreeing/liking/etc.) to discuss how the variety of social locations we occupy affect our later life experience. What suggestions do you have to harness their privilege and minimize their disadvantages as it relates to older adulthood? Use scholarly and/or credible sources to support your argument (not the textbook!)
1- Ailin Martinez-Vela:Social locations that I currently occupy that might privilege me once I enter older adulthood is my marital status. I am currently married, never marrying can increase feelings of loneliness and can lead to depressive moods. Having a lifelong partner to share experiences with brings happiness and increases social interaction in older adulthood. Maintaining heathy social interactions can make you feel healthier and keep your brain stimulated which is crucial as you age. Shmerling, MD states that “research suggests that married people enjoy better health than single people” (Shmerling, MD, 2016). He states that those who are married live longer, have fewer strokes, and heart attacks, and have lower chance of depression (Shmerling, MD, 2016). A social location that I occupy that might disadvantage me in older adulthood is being a woman. Our lecture for the week explains that women in their early 60s are likely to lack health insurance. Having health insurance is important, it allows you to get all your needed medical expenses fully paid or if not a majority if it. Fertility issue also seem to increase for women as we get older. Reproductivefacts. Org explains that not only does conceiving become harder for women as they get older, but miscarriages and chromosomal abnormalities are more common (2021). This is now becoming more of an issue especially since woman now are waiting longer to start a family. I think that getting married is not a must but maintaining social interactions is highly important and can be done even if you don’t ever get married. For woman that do want to plan have kids later in adulthood they have the possibility of freezing their eggs or choosing to adopt. Write reply…

Somethings that may privilege me in the future will pertain to me in the form of or through the regard of education. Taking this course has given me the knowledge I need to know when I become an older adult. This course will help me learn and get used to the idea that if I “train” my mind to the idea or notion of old age, that I will be better prepared as I transition into older adulthood (Applewhite, 2016). I know that creating and maintaining a physical routine daily can lead to physical functioning without any assistance in later life (Yan et al., 2004). I know many of the misconceptions held by younger populations that older people aren’t sexually intimate or active is false. As an older adult, these myths will allow me to live a life that doesn’t make me feel awkward or abnormal. Something that may disadvantage me includes my gender. Stress at earlier ages may induce the menopause that women normally experiences in older adulthood (Novak and Lozano-Keymolen 2018). Granted that I am in school, it is safe to say that I am not financially in the best place or place I would like to be. This may cause me some stress or bit of duress and can impact me. If I don’t learn how to manage my stress or react better to my stressors, I may go through menopause at an earlier age. This may put me at a disadvantage but learning techniques to help me manage my stress, taking care of my body through daily physical exercise, listening and gaining perspective on the lives of older adults around me will better prepare my for my life later as an older adult.
