The post discussion: construct an argument to your peers on why multigenerational living is beneficial to older adults AND better for society. Use scholarly and/or credible sources to support your argument (not the textbook!). The answer:
Multi-generational living can be understood as living in a home that held two adult generations or more (Muennig, 2017). Multi-generational living is beneficial to older adult financially, as it improves their wellbeing and it also benefit society environmentally. A study by Muennig et al. (2017) supports that multi-generational living is beneficial for adulting. The study confirms with a 95% confidence that families who lived in a two-generation home had a much lower rate of premature mortality than family who lived alone or in single generational home.Another study by Lee et al. (2021) demonstrates that people that were raised from a multigenerational arrangement livings showed superior cognitive functions compared to those who came from two-parent homes. Meanwhile, single parent individuals had poorer cognitive functions compared to both two-parents and multigenerational households. In addition, on a per capita basis, the larger the size of a household, the less resource are being consumption and less waste are produced which benefits the environment and proves that multi-generational benefits society at large (Klocker, 2017). My classmates posts: 1- Marianne Gourd : Usually, most older adults want to live in their homes as long as possible because that’s where they spent most of their lives building those memories. Multigenerational households not only have been helping older adults by being able to live in the home, but they also provide support for their children and grandchildren. Living in multigeneration households benefits in many ways; for one thing, it helps with finances. Having multiple people contributing to household expenses puts less financial burden onto everyone in that family. One of the things it helps with is that it provides meaning to older adults’ lives; it makes them feel they are wanted, needed and gives them something to do.Another beneficial thing is the time grandparents get to have with their grandchildren, which can help also help with babysitting. According to the article by Mariana Amorim, she states that “grandparent’s time contributions in caring for grandchildren or doing household chores may allow parents to work or study, to earn more, and to invest more money in their own children” (p. 8). She’s saying that since older adults spend time with grandchildren, they can help with babysitting, childcaring, and doing some household chores. Doing all that puts less financial burden and puts less stress on having to do chores for the parents, so they contribute more time to work to make money. Having grandparents spend more time with their grandchildren can contribute to society. By teaching them good values and allowing the parents to make more money, the child can go to good schools and get an excellent job contributing to society. Reply…
2- Ailin Martinez-Vela:Multigenerational living is beneficial for older adults because it avoids feelings of loneliness and increases social interactions with family members. It is important that older adults maintain everyday social interactions because it promotes better mental health. Being at home older adults can help around the house with small chores or with childcare supervision. Seniors can help serve as role models for younger adults in the family by sharing their wisdom and passing down cultural customs. This can help older adults gain a sense of purpose. By sharing a multigenerational home, seniors can stay connected with family through daily familial activities. Familial activities can help improve mental health because they decrease feelings of loneliness. Multiculturalcaregiving.net explains that “a sense of connectedness can reinforce a senior’s self-esteem and can help to maintain connections throughout the community” (2021). Being surrounded by family they trust, and love can also help seniors always feel safe. Multigenerational living is better for society because grandchildren can learn and grow by connecting with elder generations. Younger generation learn how to care for elders through a multigenerational lifestyle. This benefits society because it allows generations to learn what resources are needed and can lead to a better future for out aging society.
