I’m working on a history discussion question and need guidance to help me learn.
In one of our readings this week, Thomas King, argues that we “think that history is the past. It’s not. History is the stories we tell about the past.” In the reading from King, he suggests that we “forget Columbus” and instead select a different starting point in which to begin an exploration of Indigenous history. Presume you are speaking to a friend who has not read this material and explain where King begins his history, what event does he focus on and given what you have learned from reading Dunbar-Ortiz’s An Indigenous Peoples History of the United States, what effect do the stories that are told about this event have on people’s understanding of history?
