For this discussion forum I’d like you to discuss what you’ve learned about Personal Statements and Cover letters in a paragraph or two. Once you’re done, comment on one (1) posts from other students.
Things to discuss:
- What’s the difference between a cover letter and a personal statement?
- Have you ever written one of these documents before? If so, is there anything you’ll do differently this time?
- Why should you create a tailored document for each position/program you’re applying to?
- What are some things you shouldn’t do when writing a cover letter or a personal statement?
- What are some of the best tips you read about for writing a cover letter or a personal statement?
- Or just give us your notes on each.

The difference between a cover letter and a personal statement is a cover letter is explaining why you’re fit for the job you’re applying for and a personal statement is a story either about yourself or what makes you interested in furthering your education at the certain program. A cover letter is for a resume and a personal statement is for a CV. I haven’t written either a cover letter or a personal statement before, so this week’s assignment will be my first attempt at one.
I think it’s important to create a tailored document for each position/program you’re applying to because it’s what makes you stand out. If someone were to submit a general cover letter or personal statement that doesn’t fully meet all the requirements needed for the certain job or program, the hiring manager/admissions won’t be impressed with what they’re bringing to the table. When writing a personal statement it’s important to make sure that you’re not being unprofessional. Make sure in the story you tell you’re not oversharing, using profanity, or talking down on any students or professors. One of the best tips I read for making a great personal statement was to make sure you’re vulnerable and use your own voice while telling the required story. While using big words and flexing your academic accomplishments seems like the proper thing to do, I learned that a lot of graduate admissions just want to learn about YOU to figure out why you, as a person, are a good fit for their program.

I have never written a cover letter, but have written personal statements when first applying to college. A cover letter acts as a supplement to you resume and should highlight what makes you a great fit for the job position. The cover letter is usually three main paragraphs should include an opening paragraph, middle paragraph, and a closing paragraph. The opening paragraph should introduce yourself and state why you are applying for the job. This first paragraph should emphasize why you are excited for this opening and how the job lines up with your career jobs. The middle paragraph should dig into your relevant experience and should focus on the specific qualifications that make you the ideal candidate. The final/closing paragraph should end by thanking the employer and closing the letter off. On the other hand, the personal statement should tell a story about your passions for the subject you are interested in studying. It is crucial to understand what it is being looked for in the essay and to share key factors to who you are as an individual. With that being said, you can be vulnerable but do not overshare. Lastly, be sure to summarize your journey and leave a strong impression.
