Grossmont College Making Up People Academic Summary and Response

• Write a 1-2 paragraph academic summary of Ian Hacking’s “Making Up People,”
  following the WHAT/HOW/WHY format offered in class.
• Apply Hacking’s argument/theory to a different classification or identity-based group of
  people not mentioned in the article and discuss how his argument works (or does not
  work) with your example.
  • Explain your response with a specific example from your observations or
    experiences.
  • Connect your example directly to a point or points that Hacking makes in
    the article; you can reference Hacking by directly quoting him, or by
    paraphrasing his point(s).

theory to an example not in the text and discusses specific connections to the text.
● Academic summary and response are specific and accurate, and do not misrepresent
Hacking’s arguments or points.
● Totals 500-750 words; typed; Arial 11 or Times New Roman 12 font, 1” margins, 1.5 or
double spaced.
● Demonstrates correct writing mechanics (grammar and usage); is fully developed with
clarity and organization of ideas.
● Meets academic integrity expectations and includes student’s original ideas and writing;
all sources, including the article itself, are cited in-text. No MLA works cited page
required.
