Grossmont College Hammer Museum Exhibition Review

For this assignment, you are required to write a critical review of an art exhibition in a local gallery or museum in essay format  ( An essay includes an introductory paragraph with the author’s point of view, supporting information within the paper, and finally a conclusion, or summary paragraph) . You must write about a currentshow at an art gallery or museum ( onsite or virtual.)

You may not use this same essay for any other class that requires a similar assignment. To do so would result in an F for the assignment in this class. Do not repurpose THIS essay in any other course. That is called ” self plagiarizing” and you cannot get credit for doing the same assignment for TWO different courses.

Guidelines:
A critical review should not simply rehash the contents of the exhibition. Rather, it is an opportunity to evaluate the argument or thesis of an exhibition and how well the exhibition makes its case.

You are encouraged to search for reviews of your chosen exhibition both in print and online media in order to consider the opinions of other critics, but your own voice and opinions should emerge clearly in your review.

Citations for this exercise must conform to the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th or 16th edition. https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citatio…

Your review must include, tho not exactly in this order depending on your writing :

  1. The name of the institution, the title of the exhibition, the name of the curator(s), and any other information salient to the production and presentation of the exhibition as a whole.
  2. Why did you choose this over other options?
  3. If you toured virtually, was the virtual tour easy to navigate? Did it provide enough content?
  4. If you toured in person, was the exhibit or show ordered in a clear reasonable manner? How long did it take you to see most of the content?
  5. A description of the works of art that comprise the exhibition and an account of their layout within the exhibition space. A brief overview of the content you examined. Explain the layout or structure of the onsite or virtual tour.
  6. Which individual pieces, exhibits or collections stood out the most, or what did you find the most interesting? Why? Describe and explain the most interesting parts of the tour. Give details and explanations here. Photos if you care to share images from your visit. Describe things as if describing to someone who may have never seen it.
  7. An analysis of the thesis or central argument of the exhibition. What contribution did the curator(s) hope the exhibition would make? Does the exhibition offer a new interpretation of the objects or materials displayed? Discuss the theme of the exhibit.
  8. An analysis of the challenges faced by the curator(s) or institution in the creation and realization of the exhibition. Do you think this was a difficult project to realize? What sort of choices or risks might have been involved, and what contingent factors (budget, time, loan expenses, etc.) might have affected the outcome of the exhibition?
  9. Was there anything you found unappealing about the exhibit or was there content that you wanted to see that was NOT there? Anything you wanted to see more of? Was anything disappointing about the show or exhibit?
  10. Feel free to add anything else that comes to mind while writing the essay, but stay on point.
  11. Your evaluation of the exhibition as a whole. Does the exhibition achieve its stated objectives? What questions or issues does it leave unresolved? This is not necessarily a matter of “yes” or “no.” You may conclude that the exhibition was more successful in some respects than others.
