2.17 What Might You Write About for Paper #2? (GRADED DISCUSSION)
2727 unread replies.2727 replies.
OVERVIEW
In this unit, we have considered flawed and harmful rhetoric, how it propagates online via social and traditional media, and what its effects might be on the culture. For Paper #2, you will be asked to evaluate and place in its proper context one of these flawed or harmful arguments, for the sake of an imaginary audience that has a stake in that argument’s message. For example, if you choose to analyze the argument of the anti-vaccine movement, you would make your case regarding the harm that idea inflicts on communities to an imagined audience of anti-vaxxers.

Consider which flawed or harmful arguments have had an impact on our culture and are of interest to you. If it helps, you can select a conspiracy theory, since such arguments are usually non sequiturs by nature. Write a 1-2 paragraph reflection on which arguments you are considering writing about, and why. How might you conduct research? How would you include primary source materials – especially conspiracy theories – in context? If you are considering analyzing harmful rhetoric, such as the racist rhetoric of far-right extremist groups such as the Proud Boys or the Ku Klux Klan, how might you do so accurately but with sensitivity?

Writing about a sensitive or complex real-world topic can be challenging. In 5-7 sentences, what advice or encouragement can you offer 2 of your classmates? (For this week’s post, you can wait for Canvas to assign you two classmates to respond to, or you can select your own.)
