Topics
You have two options for this analysis:
- Choose an image from USA Today’s “19 captivating images from the week’s protests over George Floyd’s death,” (Links to an external site.) by N’dea Yancey-Bragg. Save the image and be sure to include it with your post.
Instructions
Your initial post must include these three elements:
- First describe the image and explain how it participates in civic discourse. What is it’s message? Which civic issue does it address?
- Then perform a brief rhetorical analysis of the visual elements in the image. Include your analysis of:
- The rhetorical situation (audience, purpose, context) (Links to an external site.)
- Use of words and typography (Links to an external site.)
- Color in the image (Links to an external site.)
- The images and their arrangement (Links to an external site.)
- Use of ethos, pathos, and logos (Links to an external site.)
- Finally, describe one civic issue that you are passionate about. This could be voting rights, Black Lives Matter, immigration policy, education, etc. Explain why you are interested in this issue and how you might go about contributing to a discourse regarding this issue.
Be sure to use quotes, paraphrases, and summaries from our course materials to support your analysis. Use APA or MLA in-text citations and a works cited or references page.
Responses to Classmates
Two responses to classmates are required for this discussion. In your responses, address the quality and detail of the analysis your classmates performed. Did they address all of the required components of the analysis. Can you add anything to their analysis? Was your approach to the visual rhetorical analysis different from your classmates’? In what way?
You can also use the RISE model (Links to an external site.)when you respond:
- Reflect: What do you agree/disagree with in your peer’s post?
- Inquire: Ask an insightful question about your peer’s post.
- Suggest: Make a kind suggestion to your peer or make an insightful comment that will help them better understand rhetoric.
- Elevate: Offer an additional resource your peer might find helpful, or make connections between your post and your peer’s post. Elevate the conversation by providing information that will be helpful in the future.
