This short essay is designed to test your conceptual understanding of the topics from our lectures based on chapters 25, 26, and 27 (NOT 27.4) in a format that practices your technical, scientific writing skills .
1 Darwin ascribed specific emotions to animals and did so from a human (or anthropocentric) perspective. By definition, this would be considered anthropomorphism. Provide both a positive and a negative consequence of anthropomorphism in biology. In other words, how can this view be to our benefit as biologists and also our detriment as biologists. Use relevant examples from class.
2.Describe the proximate and ultimate goals of worker bees in a honey bee colony. Include in your answer examples of cooperative behavior among individual bees.
3.Pumpkinseed sunfish in different pond populations revealed variance in population growth. Describe how age class and survival probabilities inform our interpretation of these data. Support your answer with a description of how age structures are emergent properties in these populations.
4.Describe the dynamics of a metapopulation and the subpopulations from which it persists. Include in your answer relevant examples from class and how the geography of the subpopulations may affect the structure of the overall metapopulation.
5. . Reintroduction of species into a habitat can restore the emergent properties of that ecosystem OR can prove to be more complicated than anticipated. Discuss two pros and two cons of wolf reintroduction in Yellowstone National Park. Frame your answer in terms of biological properties, such as predator/prey interactions, competition, trophic cascade, etc.
