Epidemiology is research focused on the health, disease, and injuries in the population and how these are distributed and the factors that affect them. It assists with addressing population health issues because the focus of the data is on different populations health and variables that affect their health. The data collected can be about peoples’ behaviors, specific populations and their health, and the effect of exposure to certain environments or events. Most of epidemiology is observational studies, which can assist with answering questions about different populations’ health issues. Observational studies can include variable such as living environments, exposure to toxins, or population behaviors. This data helps createhealthcare interventions that lead to advancements in healthcare. Regarding population health, it can also help predict future health needs, cause and effect relationships, and evaluate effectiveness of health interventions (DeNisco & Barker, 2016).

A contemporary example of epidemiology is the different health issues that affect people who smoke and those who do not smoke. In this situation, the population who smokes are at higher risk for lung and heart disease versus the population who does not smoke. By studying the factors effecting different populations, it can lead to health discoveries (Forrest, 2019).
