Professionalism is defined as the ability to make ethical decisions, values, and behaviors and commit to upholding personal and professional ideals (Slomka et al., 2008). It is a set of unique characteristics and behaviors that reflect a dedication to effective job performance. Those attributes include commitment and confidence, responsibility and dependability, honesty and ethics, attractiveness, and professional presentation (Kokemuller, 2018). In public health, professionalism entails appreciating a commitment to lifelong learning and professional service. The development of competencies for professionalism in public health is crucial more than ever as infectious illnesses, a growing emphasis on population health, and attention to the relationship between socioeconomic status and health continue to rise (Slomka et al., 2008).

Three goals to strive to achieve over the next three years that can strengthen and improve professional skills are the following:

  1. Become a good communicator and improve the channels of communication.
  2. Foster a welcoming environment in the workplace
  3. Be an ethical and trustworthy person

Being a good communicator or improving communication channels is vital in any setting or situation, especially in public health. It will help to work better with teams and people. Effective communication isn’t just about exchanging information but also requires understanding the emotion and intentions behind the information. It necessitates being a keen observer and paying attention to nonverbal cues such as body language, facial expressions, bodily movement and gestures, eye contact, posture, voice tone, and even muscular tension and respiration of others with whom we communicate (Robinson, 2021).

Fostering a welcome environment will help set the culture and tone of the workplace or project. It will also have a profound impact on morale. It’s great to retain employees because team members or coworkers will feel appreciated and valued (Richman, 2013). Finally, the last goal will always be to strive to be an ethical and trustworthy person. Being an ethical and responsible person will ensure that I act towards the people I relate to personally or professionally. As an ethical person, I will always seek to do what is suitable for those I work for or work with. Commitment and right doing are necessary to serve and protect the health of the population and communities.
