Grand Canyon University Importance of Being a Nurse Educator Response

To effectively educate the next generation of nurses and equip them for roles in population health management, we need more academic nurse educators. Challenges and barriers to this end center around the shortage of nurse educators, budget constraints, and higher compensation in clinical settings. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN, n.d.) reports that faculty shortages across the country limit student capacity when the need for RNs continues to grow. The AACN (n.d.) notes an average salary for NPs across settings at $110,000 compared with an average for a master’s-prepared Assistant Professor of nursing at $79,444, reported in 2020. Efforts to increase the number of nurse educators is further hindered by the fact that thousands of applicants to graduate nursing programs are turned away each year because of faculty and clinical education site shortages (AACN, n.d.).
