Americans spend the most out-of-pocket on healthcare than citizens of other countries. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the pressure to reduce costs related to healthcare has really been brought to light. As healthcare costs rise, those with low socioeconomic statuses are left behind and healthcare needs go unmet. As surprise bills, price negotiations and transparency, and prescription medication price controls being major issues, as APRNs it is our duty to advocate and ensure resources are given and community population health needs are being met. We can be involved in policy changes to assist in meeting the needs of our patients and develop interventions that will help reduce costs such as participating in price transparency and advocating for lowering drug prices.
Scope of practice for APRNs has been an ongoing area for reform. As the need for healthcare providers continually grows and a shortage is present, the need for expanding scope of practices is needed to improve access to high quality affordable care. As the current pandemic has states relaxing their scope of practice guidelines for APRNs, these policies should be continued after the pandemic in order to best provide care and meet the needs of our community.
