The current COVID-19 pandemic has created numerous problematic ethical dilemmas in public health. One ethical dilemma due to the pandemic has been a reduction in the number of patients seen for non-COVID conditions and thus an increase in delayed diagnosis for these issues. Due to the number of patients with COVID in hospitals and the prevention interventions in place at medical offices and clinics, non-COVID patients have had difficulty getting appointments to be seen for other medical conditions (Kooli, 2021).

Recent data has shown a decrease in emergency room visits and an increase in emergencies in the field. The author continues to describe how these ED visits were 42% lower in the nation compared to the previous year before COVID (Carr, 2020). Carr explains that patients experiencing cardiac episodes stayed home from the emergency room but needed paramedics because they waited to see a doctor (2020).

The response of the leaders has been an ongoing situation. Governmental officials have tried to make the best decision possible with the information discovered. The legal and regulatory consequences of creating quarantine orders have yet to be seen. However, it is in the best interest of public health officials to protect the most people possible. Therefore, since the COVID pandemic was global, difficult decisions on protecting the public were necessary. The social consequences are still being sorted out. People have already had difficulty socially in being quarantined, but in experiencing exacerbated non-COVID illnesses, there could be tremendous social consequences in the future.
