Grand Canyon University Advancement of Colored People CACREP Standards Paper

As you know, social justice and advocacy are important aspects of counseling. As such, groups exist that are dedicated to advocating for specific cultural groups. Individuals experiencing substance use disorders often experience barriers and judgement from society and may have a difficult time accessing resources. Several advocacy groups exist to promote education and recovery for these individuals. Research and choose one of these advocacy groups that you connect with. What is the name of the group and what issue(s) are they advocating? How can you become involved with the group and why do you think it would be important to get involved? What process does the advocacy group you researched use to address institutional and social barriers that impede access, equity, and success for clients?

This discussion question is informed by the following CACREP Standards:

2.F.1.e. Advocacy processes needed to address institutional and social barriers that impede access, equity, and success for clients.

2.F.2.h. Strategies for identifying and eliminating barriers, prejudices, and processes of intentional and unintentional oppression and discrimination.
