  • Recognize that the foundation of a historical essay is the thesis statement.
  • Put together a thesis statement that is argumentative and based on historical reasons.
  • Use historical evidence in the form of primary sources and secondary source examples.
  • Paraphrase (not quote) the readings to substantiate student’s arguments.
  • Cite sources using Chicago style footnotes.
