Glendale Community College Racial Attitudes in the South Discussion

From “Arrest and Accusation”: “The different newspaper renditions of events in the immediate aftermath of the two women’s rape claims harbingered a dramatic and intensifying competition involving the media, interest groups, and courtroom actors to give meaning to the Scottsboro case” (4).

Exercise: Provide three newspaper “renditions” of the events that were published; offer a quote and explanation to clarify each newspaper’s “rendition.” Make sure that at least one of your responses is about a portrayal of one of the girls involved in the case.

Here’s an example: The Communist newspaper, the Daily Worker, painted a rather different picture of the girls than other publications did. The Communist Party was more on the side of the boys than the two girls and printed an article that “emphasized that a ‘prominent county official admitted to [an] investigator that the two girls supposed to have been attacked are notorious prostitutes’” (8).

So come up with three of your own. (No, you can’t use the one I just did; come on, show some initiative.)
