This week we’re discussing four short stories that give four really distinct near futures. Your focus this week is world building. World building is the development of an imaginary landscape, including its backstory, history, geography, currency, rituals, ideologies, etc. It is an essential part of all fiction, but is particularly critical to speculative fiction and film. Think of the intricate details of the worlds created in our most recent viewings such as Black is King or Pumzi. That is world building. Your task is to discuss the role and significance of world building in each story and what these illustrations invite us to consider about gender in their respective worlds and our own.
