George Mason University Nickel and Dimed Reading and Discussion

Chapters from the book “Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America” by Barbara Ehrenreich have been uploaded on blackboard under the orientation week tab. You don’t have to read all the four chapters, but you can if you would like to. For the purpose of this assignment, read the introductory chapter titled “Introduction: Getting Ready” and then read one out of the next three chapters (read either “Serving in Florida” or “Scrubbing in Maine” or Selling in Minnesota”). After reading one of the chapters, present a brief summary of the chapter and also comment on what you found to be most fascinating or interesting parts of the book and why. What does the chapter highlight when it comes to our society’s major social problems?

The assignment should attempt to address the following:

?Brief summary of the text. However, the summary should demonstrate that you have read the text closely. Summaries that do not reflect a detail reading of the text will lose points.

?What is the main problem/issue/concept that the author is addressing?

?What is the author’s central claim, argument, or point?

? What assumptions does the author make?

? What evidence does the author present?

? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the text?? Do you agree or disagree with the author’s central argument and why?
