Geology Newscast

GENERAL

You are a popular news anchor appearing before millions of listens to report on recent geologic events. Writing a newscast is different from the class discussions. For this topic, you will visit a pre-determined geology website, locate an interesting article, and summarize it to the studio audience. The newscast should tell a story with facts and statements. Avoid articles with a lot of highly technical terms or topics beyond the scope of the course. Be creative, you want to grab the attention of your audience.

DIRECTIONS

  • Visit a science news website like Sci-News or Science Daily
  • Examine and select an article on recent research or a recent geology-related event.
  • Write the title and author of the article in the subject line.
  • Provide a link to the article in your post.
  • Summarize the article in your own words and fact-check at least two assertions in the article.
  • Create a newscast based on your summary, example types include podcast (recording), TV broadcast, or radio script.
  • Read the articles posted by fellow students on the Discussion Board.
  • Respond to at least two students, different from your topic. What did you learn from the other article? Would the topic of the article be something you would want to learn more about in class? Did you learn a lot or were you thirsty for more information?

GRADING

  • Your initial topic should be at least 125 words or a two-minute podcast*.
  • Provide a link to your article, and list all outside resources used to fact check the article; include at least one citation.
  • Each response should be at least two to three complete sentences (see directions above).
