There are grades to consider when looking at the levels of evidence. They should consider the three domains: quality, quantity, and consistency. Quality is the extent that the study has overall minimal bias. Quantity is the overall sample size and strength of risk or odds ratio. The consistency measures whether the similar or different studies report similar findings. (Mazurek Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015) The evidence is then placed in hierarchal orders, with the highest being the intervention you would be most confident it would cause the targeted health effect. The top is evidence summaries, followed by experimental research studies (RCT’s), then non experimental studies, and the bottom is made up of qualitative studies, expert opinion, theory, and basic science. So you would want to choose the evidence that would yield you the highest amount of confidence that it would yield the results to help drive your clinical change.
