An example of a local health care policy in Washington State that has recently by enacted due to research and devasting effects of increasing insulin prices is the bill E2SSB 6087 which is “Imposing Cost-sharing Requirements for Coverage of Insulin Products – Limits out-of-pocket expenses for a 30-day supply of insulin to $100. Requires the Health Care Authority to monitor the price of insulin.” (Health and Wellness Committee, 2020)
The governor of Washington has approved this bill to limit skyrocketing insulin prices for patients with diabetes. The Mayo Clinic one of the world-renowned healthcare institutions, states that “This vital hormone—you can’t survive without it—regulates blood sugar (glucose) in the body, a very complicated process.” (Mayo Clinic, 2019) The Washington state law states:
“Prescription insulin drugs must be covered without being subject to a deductible, and any cost-sharing paid by an enrollee must be applied toward the enrollee’s deductible obligation. The legislature finds that diabetes imposes a significant health risk and tremendous financial burden on the citizens and government of the state of Washington and that access to the medically accepted standards of care for diabetes, its treatment, and supplies, and self-management training and education is crucial to prevent or delay the short and long-term complications of diabetes and its attendant costs.” (Washington SB6087: 2019-2020)
