Frontier of Freedom

Assignment: Make a game.

That’s it! The Frontier of Freedom assignment is designed to allow students to make the game that they want to make and to explore topics in game design that they’re interested in. The only requirements for this assignment are:

-The game must be finished

-I must be able to play the game (submit a playable build for video games and a printout or rules for physical games)

-The game should be unique (I don’t want to see Monopoly, but with dinosaurs or checkers, but with sharks, etc.)

-You must playtest the game with at least 2 playtesters

Note: You may complete this assignment alone, or you may work in groups of up to three students.

If you have the technical knowledge, feel free to make a video game. If not, stick to something physical like a card game or board game

For your final submission, you should include:

1.) A document including:

Name of your game

Summary that includes the genre, goals, and general gameplay and mechanics of your game (1-2 paragraphs)

Analysis that discusses what worked well with the game and what didn’t work as well (2-3 paragraphs)

Answer the following questions in the analysis:

Did players understand the rules and mechanics? Why or why not?

Does the game seem balanced? If not, why is that the case, and how could you balance it in the future?

Did the playtesters have fun? Why or why not?

2.) 2 completed playtest surveys

3.) The game

Physical Game: Printable game board/pieces and/or a list of rules for the game.
