- We’ve talked a lot about how Romantic poetry sought to “open the eyes” of its readers about the truemeanings and values of life. Take a moment to recall the specific elements, values and messages thatcharacterize the Romantic poems we’ve studied. With them in mind, consider what Romantic poetry wouldlook like in today’s day and age. What kinds of topics or social messages might the Romantic poetry of 2020- 2021 include? What perspective of specific contemporary issues would Romantic poetry take? What would Romantic poetry insist is important for us to remember? In other words – What might the Romantic poetry of 2020-2021 try to “open our eyes” to in regard to the true meanings and values of our contemporary lives? How do you know? Be sure to refer to (and cite) specific details and examples from the original poems in support of your assumptions.
- As you know, Frankenstein was written over 200 years ago. And yet, there’s probably not a single studenthere who hasn’t heard of this story, or its infamous Monster. Thinking of as many present-day cultural references to Frankenstein as you can – consider Halloween decorations and costumes, movies, other books, etc. — explain what, specifically, you think it is about this novel that really “taps into” our collectiveconsciousness somehow. In other words – what is it about this novel that sticks with us as society? Why does it remain popular in our culture? How have elements of the novel been adapted or changed? Why have we all already heard of Frankenstein? Be sure to cite supporting details and examples from the novel in your response.
