  1. Welcome to Module 13. This week, let’s begin this week’s materials by watching Prof. James Mayfield’s lecture, which provides a quick overview of how the relationship between the US government and American Indian tribes from the late 1880s (where we left off last week) to the 1950s. His lecture particularly focuses on Tribal Termination and Relocation policies of the 1950s-1960s, which ultimately leads to the American Indian Civil Rights movement in the 1960s-1970s. Be sure to take careful notes to help prepare you for this week’s readings from the textbook and for this week’s discussion blog.
  2. Next, please read chapter 9 “US Triumphalism and Peacetime Colonialism” and chapter 10 “Ghost Dance Prophecy: A Nation is Coming” on pages 162-177 and 178-196, in the textbook while taking careful notes and considering what we learned from Prof. Mayfield’s lecture.
  3. After completing the required readings from the textbook, please read the short article “The Alcatraz Indian Occupation,” which provides important background information about the occupation, and then watch the corresponding short documentary called “We Hold The Rock” for a deeper understanding of the movement. For both, be sure to take careful notes for this week’s discussion blog posts.
  4. Once you have completed the reading and the documentary for a fuller picture of the occupation, we will wrap up by reading the Alcatraz Proclamation. As you read the proclamation, take note of any historical allusions, tone, purpose, intended audience, etc. to prepare for this week’s discussion blog assignment.
  5. Lastly, be sure to complete Blog #6. Don’t forget to write an initial 400 word minimum post in response to the prompt, and then post another 200 word minimum response to a peer’s post (You can make a reply to the same discussion that you will write as. New student replying to it)
