Scenario:
Administration is asking you, as risk manager, why your facility has a 20% increase in needle stick injuries over the past year. Additionally, yesterday a patient came to the emergency department with a needle stick injury. The patient was only given a tetanus shot and sent home.
DQ1: Research needle stick injury protocol. Then describe the top three items you would suggest as a risk manager regarding policy for your healthcare setting. Be specific. Finally, describe how you would respond to Administration regarding the increase in needle stick injuries at your facility.

Scenario:
While treating a patient in the ER with a leg laceration, a provider notices a visitor with the patient who is talking on a cell phone in the treatment area while the Provider is talking to the patient. The Provider does not know who is on the other end of the phone, but the person in the room with the patient is clearly discussing the patient’s condition over the phone, and relaying word-for -word what the provider is saying.
DQ2: Describe at least one risk management issue related to the scenario. Then describe whether the use of cell phones impacts or does not impact risk management in a healthcare setting. As a healthcare provider how would you deal with the above situation?
