ASSIGNMENT:

Consider this 16th century Dutch paining created by Pieter Brueghel entitled Dutch Proverbs

Can you identify any Proverbs in the painting?

2 STudent responses that need to be reflected- ( PLEASE REFLECT WITHOUT AGREEING OR DISAGREEING FOR SHE DOES NOT ACCEPT THAT SHE WANTS TO SEE REFLECTION)

I remember learning about this painting and the proverbs in it in my high school christian spirituality class however i do not remember all about it, i know there is around 120 proverbs portrayed in the painting, some that are very popular and well known and somI did this in a HS lit class when the teacher taught idioms…I think. But looking at this again I can not seem to remember many.  I do see:

  •  Bang your head against a brick wall
  • One shoe on one shoe off
  • big fish will eat small fish
  • throw good money after bad
  • the one with the woman throwing out the bath water….is it throw the baby out with the bath water?
  • I know there is one about an old roof needing money
  • how the cards fall
  • the world is turned upside down
  • the blind leading the blind
  •

e that are not. Some popular ones found in the painting are

1. Banging ones head against a brick wall meaning trying to achieve the impossible

2. one shoe on one shoe off signifying the imbalance of the world

3. sitting between two buckets of ash meaning indecisiveness

4. depending on the luck of the card on the table showing life is all about luck

5. dying in cast is showing that once a decision is make it most likely cannot be taken back
