This 10-12 page argumentative paper is the culminating project of this course and is tied to the article review and the annotated bibliography. You will select a topic of interest in your field of study (if you choose, this may be related to the problem you worked on in essay 2 or the issue you worked on in essay 1 but you are not tied to these topics). Then, you will craft a research question that you would like to answer in this paper. Identify whether you would like to take a position on an issue in your field, speculate about causes for a related trend or phenomenon, give an evaluation, or solve a problem in your field. The genre you choose to guide your essay will determine which chapters of the SMG are most useful to you as a guide.
Research is a key portion of this essay because this is a foray into the discourse community you would like to join and to become part of that conversation, you must listen to what is being discussed (in most cases by reading what is being written in the field). Research will also help you as you narrow your scope. While 10-12 pages may sound like a very long essay, you will actually need to be careful not to choose too broad of a scope.

o Alternate Sourcing (if you choose to base your paper in field research): interviews with knowledgeable people intimately connected to the problem, print sources related to the problem (a brochure, website, or other available literature)
