Introduction

The title of this discussion is “Emoticons, Emoji and Avatars, Oh My,” and it is linked to information found in Chapter 5, “Nonverbal Messages Speak.” According to The Communication Playbook, when online, many of us use photos to establish our online identity. Based on others’ photos we decide whether or not to engage. According to Techcrunch.com in June, 2019, Facebook announced it would launch Avatars, a feature that will let you customize a virtual lookalike for use as stickers in chat and comments. Once you personalize your Avatar’s face, hair and clothes Facebook will star in a range of frequently updated stickers conveying common emotions and phrases.

The purpose of this discussion is to examine our own use of non/verbal visual symbols, including emoticons, emoji and/or Avatars to represent yourself when you are engaged in any type of digital communication (phone text, online messaging, social media posts, etc.)

Instructions for Chapter 5 Assignment

  • Review the section titled “Technology and Nonverbal Communication” found on pages 128-130 in our textbook. 
  • Review the section on Emoticons and Emoji on the lecture page of this module.
  • Answer the following questions for your initial post:
  1. Describe your personal use of emoticons, emoji and/or Avatars in a given day.
  2. Give/show some examples of the typical ones you use in each category and include where (in which context) you use them.
  3. Choose one of the three categories (emoticons, emoji, Avatars), and add some information from an outside scholarly source
  4. Do you think you will pay more attention to how you use typed/visual nonverbal symbols after this discussion?
