Florida International University Persepolis Cultural Backgrounds Literature Paper

TOPICS:

After reading Persepolis, listening to Jhumpa Lahiri’s interviews, and reading the poetry of Naomi Shihab Nye reflect on the other modules and the other cultures you have been exposed to throughout the various readings.

  • How are war, oppression, immigration, language relevant to the cultures referred to in this module?

Make sure to make specific references/experiences in the texts from these modules and how they compare / contrast to texts from other modules.

REQUIREMENTS:

You will not be able to reply to other students until you create your own post. When you’re done, get to know some of the other students in the class. Reply to at least 1 other student. If you are one of the first students to post in a discussion forum, you may have to return to the forum later to complete the reply posts.

The essays in your “new thread” in the discussion are Gordon Rule assignments. Therefore, you should use your best writing skills when you work on these assignments. Each essay and discussion assignment has four basic requirements:

  1. Prepare: Read the literature and take note of its discussion question. Be careful to answer the discussion question for each essay. You work needs to be “on topic,” as the saying goes.
  2. Write: Adhere to the length requirements for the essay and the discussion portion of the assignment.”New Threads” should be at least 350 words in length. As you write, Blackboard will keep track of your word count, so it’s easy to know where you are. After you submit your new thread, you will be able to read the other students’ posts. Your essay MUST have an introduction, 2 short body paragraphs, and a conclusion. If you submit just one paragraph for this assignment, you will automatically receive no more than 60%. Organization /Format Reminder: Keep in mind that this is a short essay assignment, not a paragraph assignment. Thus, you must have an introduction, body, and conclusion in your original response.
  3. Reply: You must respond to at least 2 other students/classmates to earn full credit for the assignment. Replies/responses should be in paragraph form (at least 250-500 words). Your responses could be just one short paragraph.
  4. In-text Citations: You must use at least ONE quotation per work you analyze in your short essay. Please place an in-text citation (also called a parenthetical citation) immediately after you close the quotation marks and before you place a period for your sentence. That way, anyone in the class (including me!) can easily find the quotation in the text if necessary. If you’re not sure what to place inside the parentheses, review MLA style in Module 1.
