Now it is time to develop a career plan. But, before you can develop a career plan, you need to set career goals. SMART career goals can help you create an achievable action plan. SMART stands for goals that are: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. Your goals pass the SMART test before you can start working on achieving them. Within this module, you will start developing a plan to achieve your career path by setting SMART career goals.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After successful completion of this module, students will:

  • Understand the SMART technique and how to best utilize it when career planning.
  • Create 3 SMART goals specific to your 3-year career span.

ASSIGNMENT

  1. SMART goals worksheet.svg icon download Actions Start thinking about the next 3 years and what you need to accomplish to achieve your career goals.
  2. Using the handout provided, write 3 SMART goals specific to your future career path. Please ensure that:
    • You use the SMART goals handout for each of your 3 SMART goals.
    • There will be one handout per goal; three goals- three handouts.
    • These goals are career-related for the next 3 years. No personal/life-related goals.
    • Your educational goals are acceptable as long as they relate to your career.

Please note: Do not provide personal goals, such as buying a house, becoming a millionaire, losing weight/gaining weight, getting your dream car…etc. This will result in you not being awarded points for this assignment.

WHAT TO SUBMIT

  • Completed SMART 3 Year Career Goals.
    1. Remember that you are submitting 3 goals, so there should be one handout for each goal.
    2. Please make sure your goals are career-related before you submit them.

    4. SPECIFIC: What do you want to accomplish? (
    5. M)MEASURABLE: How will you know when you have accomplished your goal?
    6. (A)ATTAINABLE: How can the goal be accomplished?
    7. (R)RELEVANT: Is this goal worth working hard to accomplish?
    8. Explain. (T) TIME-BOUND: By when will the goal be accomplishe.
