Title: Five-Factor Theory

Instructions: This activity requires that students have access to the Internet, so it may work best as a mini take-home assignment. Have students do the following:

  1. Predict how you will fall on the Big Five dimensions of personality. Compare yourself to an imaginary sample of 100 people—for example, I am more agreeable than about 70 people out of 100 = 70th percentile.
  2. Take the Big Five personality test at www.outofservice.com/bigfive/. (You don’t have to answer the demographic questions at the bottom if you don’t wish to; you can get your results without answering them.) Copy the URL at the bottom of the page with your results and paste it into your learning pod thread submission. Also describe your results in terms of percentiles (for example, “Openness, 10th percentile”).
  3. Were there any surprises? Why do you think these might occur?
  4. What factors OTHER than underlying personality might contribute to responses to questions such as those appearing in the test?
