This activity is meant to help you interact with how display rules emerge using your own personal emotional experiences. First, you will be asked to describe four situations in which you experienced one of the following emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, and surprise. Next, you will be asked to compare these situations and to try to identify the cultural rules governing these emotional experiences.

1. Happiness: Describe a situation where you experience happiness (3 or 4 sentences will do). To help you in this process, you might consider the following questions: What was the setting in which you experienced happiness? Were you alone or with others? Were you in a public or private place? What elicited happiness? How did you express your happiness?

2. Sadness: Describe a situation where you experience sadness (3 or 4 sentences will do). To help you in this process, you might consider the following questions: What was the setting in which you experienced sadness? Were you alone or with others? Were you in a public or private place? What elicited sadness? How did you express your sadness?

3. Anger: Describe a situation where you experience anger (3 or 4 sentences will do). To help you in this process, you might consider the following questions: What was the setting in which you experienced anger? Were you alone or with others? Were you in a public or private place? What elicited anger? How did you express your anger?

4. Surprise: Describe a situation where you experience surprise (3 or 4 sentences will do). To help you in this process, you might consider the following questions: What was the setting in which you experienced surprise? Were you alone or with others? Were you in a public or private place? What elicited surprise? How did you express your surprise?

5. Now compare how you expressed these 4 emotions. What do you conclude about the display rules governing the public expression of emotion? Did you observe different rules governing the expression of positive (happiness, surprise) as opposed to negative (sadness, anger) emotions?

6. Finally, reflect on the cultural foundations of the expressions of these emotions. To what extent can you trace your display rules to your cultural background or to gender socialization? Please explain.
