Readings: Selected web articles for background information. See folder in BlackBoard

Assignment: Write an essay that takes a position on the issue of

This is a personal opinion essay, so feel free to use first person, or “I.” This essay is very different from what we’ve been writing all semester. Your supporting paragraphs are based on your beliefs, NOT on any research you may have done. You can use research, but it CANNOT be the prime support for your position. It is time to get personal.

• In your introduction, describe the dilemma, making sure to include the different perspectives or positions on the dilemma.

• Then, in your thesis statement, argue for your position about the ethical dilemma. In other words, what would you do?

• You will support your position with reasoning based on your personal experiences, your unique background, and your core beliefs as they relate to your chosen dilemma.

• You will also address the counter-arguments to demonstrate that you have considered objections or limitations to your position before you come to your conclusion.

• Finally, you will write a conclusion, restating your points.

Tips for Writing this Essay:
This paper asks that you to reflect on your personal beliefs and identify aspects of your belief system, as these apply to an ethical dilemma. Some of these questions may help you to develop your essay and to think critically:
• Do you have a similar personal experience, situation, or know of someone who does?
• As you think about your core beliefs, describe why you believe the way you do and think about where these core beliefs might come from.
• What is your unique background that influences how you think? Is it your race, gender, religion, ethnic heritage, family traditions, and/or family values?
• Could your core beliefs been influenced by specific family members, friends, teachers, mentors, coaches, and/or religious leaders?
• Could your core beliefs come from something that you have read or heard?
Use these questions (and more) to provide the analysis for your position.

Constraints: The essay should be 3-4 word-processed pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman font, 12 point.

Paper Formatting: The essay should be presented in the MLA format. If you have cited sources in the body of your paper, you will need a works cited page.

Submitting your Paper:
Grading Rubric:
States an ethical position
Articulates objections to or limitations of that position
Articulates both the origins of core beliefs
Applies ethical perspectives satisfactorily
Relatively free from grammar and mechanical errors that would impede meaning.
