FILM 120 University Of California Los Angeles 1920s Hollywood Discussion

I’m studying and need help with a Film question to help me learn.

. Taking here Sherlock Jr and Thief of Bagdad as prime examples of 1920s Classical Hollywood, what are some key similarities and differences? Consider comedy v. adventure; consider also assumed values around gender and race. How might some of Gladfelder’s ideas on Keaton relate to Douglas Fairbanks and his epic, exotic, orientalist “blockbuster” of the time?

2. Drawing on Fabe’s chapter on Eisenstein and Battleship Potemkin, how might some her specific ideas relate to Man with a Movie Camera, and Ballet Mecanique? More broadly, dig deep and try to explain what these European experimental films are doing in contrast to the Classical Hollywood style of Griffith, Chaplin, Keaton, and Fairbanks? How are they expanding the artistic potential of silent cinema beyond the formulas of classical Hollywood narrative?
