WSTC02S: Feminist Qualitative Research in Action

Fall 2021

Citation           MLA citation style and MLA paper formatting: double spaced, 12pt font, Times New Roman, etc.

Now that you have completed your background research (Literature Review) and have identified the purpose of your research in the form of your focused Research Question, the next step of the research project is to identify the sample of interview participant you plan to interview, and to develop an outreach plan. (You can read about this further on page 203 of the textbook).

In your Outreach Plan you must:

  1. First: clearly identify the 1-2 sentences of your Research Question (as we finalized in class)
  2. Second: Based on the goals of your Research Question describe the demographic characteristics and experiences of your research participants.

Explain how you plan on reaching out to your interview participants. (Remember, you should not interview immediate family members or close friends.)

  • Which characteristics or criteria are central to your study and need to be common among all your participants? (consider age, race, class, sexuality, education, gender, religion, location, experience)
    • What other experiences are central to your research and why?
    • Explain why these factors are relevant and important to your study (see example below)

Example:

  • I plan on interviewing women, ages 25-30, who live in an urban environment who have given birth in the past 5 years using the services of a mid-wife. I will be interviewing women from a range of races, cultures and ethnicities. Research participants may be both hetero and homosexual.
  • I chose the above characteristics because research studies show that most women who use a midwife are older and I would like to understand the experiences of younger women and why they chose a midwife. Most women who choose a midwife are from urban areas as that is where midwives are concentrated. Studies also show that women from all ethnicities and cultures use midwives.
  • Explain by what means you plan on reaching out to your interview participants. (ie through snowball technique, through reaching out on Facebook page, making announcement in other classes, etc.) Be as specific as possible.

*If you happen to cite sources as a way to back up your reasoning, be sure to use proper MLA citation formatting.

  • Be sure to read, review, and sign the Ethical Agreement Form and submit on Quercus—it can be found on Quercus under AssignmentsàEthical Agreement Form
