Even though many deaths have already taken place at the hands of the Hutus after their president was assassinated, the UN needs to step in and put a stop to the genocide. This is where my vote would come in as a member of the UN Security council. The UN Mission in Rwanda has called for reinforcements and I feel it is my job and duty as a member the security council to help those in need when they call for help and when it is necessary for outside reinforcements to take control. I understand that many lives have been lost already and taking action would cost even more lives, but I would hope that sending more troops to Rwanda and putting a stop to the mass killings would end quickly and the death toll number would hopefully be less significant than what it would be if I did not vote to send troops and the UN just stood by. Sending troops to Rwanda would also mean that we are intervening with internal conflicts that this area of the world struggles with and many other members of the UN may not agree that we should meddle in their affairs. However, I personally don’t think the UN should just watch as the violence and massacres are being broadcasted on international tv and choose to do nothing because of opinions others have. This is also why I would throw my vote in to send more troops to Rwanda.
Being a member and signatory for the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide means that I have called the killings of Tutsis and disagreeing Hutus a genocide and am prepared to take action. Innocent people are being killed everyday just because they happen to be in a rival ethnic group or they choose not to participate in the violence. Casting a vote to send more troops in this area is the best option to end the genocide. It was the only way to stop Hitler from killing all the Jews and innocent lives were lost their as well, even after the United States sent troops to end Hitler’s evil plan. The UN has a duty to the countries associated with it and when problems like this arises, it is unfair and cowardly to just stand by. Everyone needs to help everyone in these situations to make the world a better place, or at least get rid of the ones who cause harm to innocent people. Standing by and protecting the principle of sovereignty is not what the UN stands for. I would cast my vote right away to get troops to Rwanda as quickly as possible.
