Assignment 1: Infrastructure and the Networked Home
The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we live, work, play and study.
In the context of the readings of Starr, and Graham and Marvin about interdependent infrastructures,
what has happened to your home and what will happen going forward?
The first part of the assignment is focused on how your home was networked and functioned prior to
the pandemic and how it shifted over the last 18 months. What changed? How did you live differently?
How did interaction with the outside world change?
The second part of the assignment is focused on what will happen in the medium term (3 to 5 years) in
terms of how it is networked and functions.
The home is not just a stand-alone node, it is networked. This is not just limited to the network cable
which brings internet to the home it reaches into everything that is done in the home and how
individuals living in the home interact with the outside world.
Draw a diagram for each of the three “states” (pre-Covid, during Covid, and future).
Each diagram should include a 50 to 100 words description how it works and what changes between
each state.
