  • Use this handout to discuss Part Two of F451.
  • Of course, discuss anything else you might discover that is not listed here.
  1. Analyze the title of Part Two. How is it symbolic? Also, discuss Montag’s memory with his cousin at the beach. How does that tie into the ideas in the novel?
  • What happens on the train? What is Denham’s Dentifrice? Why is it so disturbing to Montag?
  • Examine Faber as a character. What does he represent as a character?
  • Montag brings to Faber maybe the only copy of the Bible left in the States. What is the significance of that, and how is religion portrayed in this world?
  • What are the three things missing that Faber tells Montag, which books offered? Why are those things significant? And how does this society contrast to those things?
  • Both Beatty and Faber explain similarly how the world in F451 came to be. What happened? Who let it happen? Why does Bradbury highlight this point?
  • Examine the characters of Mrs. Phelps and Mrs. Bowles. Offer details of their personality, character traits, details of their lives, etc.
  • When Montag reads the poem “Dover Beach” out loud to the three women, why does Mrs. Phelps cry? And why does she, and everyone else, not know why?
  • Towards the end of Part Two, Beatty tells Montag about a dream he had sparring with Montag using literary quotes. What are some of those quotes? What is their significance? And what is Beatty trying to accomplish by telling Montag all of this?
  1. Bradbury utilizes various symbolic elements in the novel. What symbolism can you find in Part Two?
