Step 1: Annotate your own essay with comments

  • Either electronically or by hand, annotate your own essay with comments. Write in the margins, highlight, cross things out…mark it up as if you were grading and commenting on your own essay as the instructor.
    • You can use the comments feature in Google Doc by highlighting a piece of your essay and clicking the plus sign on the right hand side of the page. You can type a comment and click on “Comment”
    • To annotate in Word, highlight a phrase or sentence in your essay, click on “Review” in the top toolbar, and then on “New Comment.” You may also decide to turn “Track Changes” on–this will allow you to go in and change words and phrases, and the changes will show up in red on the document.
  • You will either scan your hard copy and upload it or upload the electronic copy
