One of the questions critical thinkers ask themselves when viewing a film is, “Does this film use the available techniques artfully?” Consider either Citizen Kane or Casablanca as discussed in Chapter 9 and explain how the film manipulates such elements as camera angles, sound, color, setting, and timing to achieve appropriate effects. Then consider the techniques employed by the modern stage drama to achieve similar effects, drawing on Chapter 9’s examination of Angels in America or Waiting for Godot. What film techniques can also be employed on the stage (if any)? What techniques do stage productions use when film techniques are not possible?
Review “Conventions of the Moving Image”, “Two American Film Classics” (Chapter 9) and “A Century of Dynamic Change” (Chapter 7).
