John C. Calhoun of South Carolina was one of the most influential defenders of slavery during the mid-1800s.Using
his speech in the Week 12 Primary Source Readings, write a 500- to
1000-word essay that shows how Frederick Douglass in his Narrative (also
in the Week 12 readings) undermined at least two of Calhoun’s arguments
in favor of slavery. Make sure you offer examples from each reading in
order to effectively show how Douglass proved Calhoun’s arguments to be
wrong. While you may bring in some lecture and textbook material for
context, most of this essay should be based on a close analysis of these
two readings. Like with the American Revolution essay, outside sources
are prohibited and any use of them will lead to a score of 0 on this
assignment. Please follow the formatting and citation rules from the
American Revolution assignment.
