The 1960s is the first time in American history that masses of people began using drugs recreationally. Certainly, Americans were smoking marijuana since the beginning of American history and Americans became addicted to the new drug morphine after the Civil War. Some used their cocaine tooth medicine for reasons other than tooth problems and the Chinese had opium dens in New York and San Francisco’s China Towns. Yet, open consumption, with new psychedelic drugs like LSC, was markedly part of the sixties and it too a revolution that along with rock music helped spark social revolutions. The sex revolution and the civil rights revolution were intertwined in interracial relationships of those of a pale complexion and those a darker. These revolutions changed race relations and the rights accorded to Black Americans, helped end the Vietnam War, and certainly made the prudish Americans happier as sex was more acceptable within society.
