Part 1 – M3.4: Discussion: Exploring the Amendment

For this discussion, find a video of something related to criminal justice in your locality (Texas, USA)) that is trending. The video could be cell phone footage similar to what was shown in the Slager trial or something less extreme but still newsworthy.

Include the video in your initial post.

React to the video from the perspective of the head criminal justice practitioner (police, courts, or corrections) in your area. Focus on the following topics in your reaction:

  • What are the circumstances of what is shown in the video?
  • Are there any direct issues for your aspect of the field of criminal justice?
  • What are the possible ramifications of the video?
  • What have the social media reactions to the video consisted of?

At this point, you have may already realized that the amendment that most applies in this module is the Sixth Amendment.

The Sixth Amendment is written as follows:

“In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defense.”
