Examining the Intersection of Technology and Policy

The writing/draft should address this question:From which country can the U.S. learn most when forming its cybersecurity strategy? Analysis should focus on a particular aspect, such as critical infrastructure security, offensive cyber, election security, etc. Explain how/why the other state has a better cybersecurity strategy in these fields. Parameters: I’ve pasted links to (2) online resources that should be cited:/nsa-shadow-brokers.htmlI%27ve” target=”_blank”>intelligence.senate.gov/sites/default/files/documents/os-dcoats-012919.pdf?mod=article_inlinenytimes/2017/11/12/us/nsa-shadow-brokers.html The writing should extract citations, but it should not excessively quote these works. The writing should also springboard from a robust thesis or argument.

Make sure to use solid arguments in your answers(as you did for the critiques). The COMM 101 exam rubric will be used for grading (posted on

BB). The quality of each essay should be equitable to the quality of the other assignments in this

class (in terms of writing, typos, APA style, citing, referencing…). However, an important

difference is that quotes are not allowed in your responses. If a quote is used in an answer, that answerwill receive a grade of F.

The most important aspect is to argue well for each of your short-essayanswers, that is, to structure your answers correctly, with statements logically following fromprevious ones and using effective argumentation. Also, make sure that your voice is differentfrom the author’s (“I argue” versus “the authors state”; it does not always have to be this way, forthe record;).

Language and writing are also factored in your grade. There is no required length for the answer though longer essays do not necessarily translate into better ones. Aim at being concise, clear, and answering the questions asked with as much detail as possible. Only .doc, .docx, or .pdf documents will be accepted, using 1” margins, 12pt size fontand double-spaced.

Note which questions you are answering.

Q1

Describe an instance when a media message (not a personal message) with a fear appeal was persuasive to you. Using the two key elements of the Extended Parallel Process Model, explain why the persuasion did or did not work. Be specific. What faculty member uses this theory, and does it work in their case?

  • See parallel-process-model.pdf for the Extended Parallel Process Model
  • See Abriletal2017.pdf for the faculty member that uses this theory.

Q2

Develop an argument (your argument) about whether social media is (a) positive or (b) negative for people (but only a or b!). Use one theory from UIC communication faculty members (from their articles/papers) to support your claim and cite it/them. Be specific, provide details (including correct citations for ideas), and develop your thesis with sub-arguments. Use an original example (i.e., not the one faculty member(s) use in their work!). Be original!
