M3 Discussion A: Evidence to Support Individual Counseling for SUDs
In prior addiction courses, you have learned about various types of treatment that are emerging and already exist within the substance use disorder (SUD) treatment field. Some individual counseling methods have been identified as showing support to help people address and recover from substance use disorder. Simply because a counseling method shows some studies with evidence for support, though, it may not be an approach that works for everyone or for all types of SUDs.
Research Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy …Consult at least 2 scholarly sources. Use your research to answer the following questions:
Provide the full reference of 2 or more sources you read, and briefly summarize the authors’ conclusions.
Did the studies you read summarize prior studies about this approach, and if so, what did those studies show?
Which patients (type of SUD, age, gender, race/ethnicity, etc.) have shown positive response to this individual method—per this study and prior studies cited?
Which groups of patients do not have evidence of positive response—either due to lack of data with the population or simply because the patients did not respond well to this method?
Was this counseling method studied using a manualized process. In other words, did practitioners in the study follow a prescribed set of written procedures and techniques to use this method so that everyone was essentially using the same procedures?
What has been the degree of effectiveness of the treatment(s) studied or analyzed?
What is the quality and strength of the evidence that this method is effective, and where are there gaps and limitations about the evidence for this approach?

- A separate page at the end of your research paper should contain a list of references, in APA 6th edition format. Use your textbook, the Library, and the internet for research.
- You are required to have at least two references in addition to the textbook, for a total of at least three.
- Be sure to cite both in-text and reference list citations were appropriate and reference all sources. Your sources and content should follow proper APA 6th edition citation style. Review the APA formatting and citation style resources found in the Writing Center. The Writing Center can be found in the Academic Success Center in the Academic Tools area of your course.
