Even in the darkest situation, a sense of self worth, ethnic pride, family , and hope shines through for the children of migrant workers in America. ( School library journal). In the book called Voices from the Fields , complied by Beth Akins and written by several migrants children who tells their stories about survival and heartbreaking situations when they came to America to start news lives. These stories are told by migrant children, and are true stories about their experiences while in their new country ,America. This book is important because it gives the real life struggles and experiences that these children go through , and how they dealt with the situations that came about because their parents decided to come to America and better their lives. These are strong children, and they have overcome many obstacles in their lives . Migrant children have many issues to overcome, but two important issues are working and home.
Migrant children at a young age have to work with their parents in the fields. This creates some issues for the children . First, children has to sometimes work in the fields with their parents which has consequences for them. As said , “the longest day in the field was when we picked a lot of strawberries. I felt bad and it was getting dark. We were out there so long. I said to my parents, “Let’s go home” and they said , “We’re going.” It is hard to work so long. My body get tired, and when it is muddy, my feet get covered in mud and it is hard to walk. Also, when it is muddy, my uncle has to park the truck far away, and I get tired and cold when I have to walk back to the truck. (page 13) I am sure that children get more tired than adults do, but a child gets tired quicker. This is an issue. Children should not have to work, their little bodies can’t take as much as an adult can. I feel that children should not work in the fields at all, they should only go to school, and this would eliminate the issue of them being tired and working. Second, children’s schooling suffers because they have to work in the fields with their parents. Atkins stated, ” But sometimes it is hard and I’m tired in school on Mondays because I worked on the weekend. I also get a lot of headaches, so sometimes I have to leave school early or go and rest in the nurse’s office. ” . (page 15) Children who work always have issues in school. They have a hard time studying and concentrating because they are tired. Children need to go to school, so they can get a good education and excel in their studies. Education is important to all people, but especially children just learning need a good foundation of education. Children must be able to only go to school, not work so they don’t get sick with headaches and body aches. I think that the issues for these children of having to work can go away if someone would recognize that children need to be children and not grow up so fast. As said, Migrant children at a young age have to work with their parents in the fields. This creates some issues for the children .
