M1: Case Study: Ethical Principles (MLO 3):

In Chapter 2, two major types of ethical theories are discussed: utilitarianism and deontological theories. The most difficult aspect of healthcare and ethics is deciding on the best course of action for a decision and providing the reasoning behind the decision. Many times there is not a cookie-cutter decision that can be used for each decision. There is many decisions that fall into our grey area and there is not just one right answer. We try to avoid the wrong answer and someone is injured or even killed.

Provide an example of each principle for a healthcare scenario where the decisions that are made can make the situation better or worse. Explain how you would justify your decision dependent on the theory that is used.

For every case study, be sure to utilize the ethical decision-making matrix. In every answer, keep in mind the following questions:

  1. What is the question?
  2. What is my “gut” reaction?
  3. What are the facts?
  4. What are the values?
  5. Who are the stakeholders?
  6. What are my options?
  7. What should I do?
  8. What justifies my choice?
  9. How can I prevent this problem from happening again?
