Social Movement Paper
Select a social movement that took place in US history (Suffrage, anti-lynching, civil rights, labor movements, women’s movement, farm workers, welfare rights, disability rights, LGBTQ rights, anti-sweat shop, anti-child labor, anti-sex trafficking, etc.)
Preferred topic: LGBTQ+ rights/Stonewall
Examine and discuss the following:
1-How did the movement originate? What events or social problems precipitated the movement?
2-Who was/were the initial leader/leaders of the movement? How/why did the leader(s) get involved?
3-What were the major issues/demands of the movement?
4-What actions were taken by the organization/movement to gain public notice and bring about change?
5-What changes resulted from this social movement in society, in general, and in the social welfare system, in particular?
6-What was the role of the social work profession or individual social workers in this movement, if any?
7-Why did you choose this movement and what was your personal reaction while examining the topic?
Papers should be between 7-8 pages in length. There is a limit to internet resources that can be utilized. At least four of your references must come from scholarly sources – journals, books, government documents. You are NOT to use Wikipedia, Encarta or any other online encyclopedia. There will be a grading penalty for papers using non scholarly resources. All papers should be written using APA style as found on the Purdue OWL site (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/).
