Topic: Crohn’s disease

This term paper will require you to use knowledge acquired from an analysis of no fewer than 11 peer-reviewed journals to create a thesis focused on the topic Crohn’s disease. This thesis will then form the core of a 6-8 page paper on Crohn’s disease.

Generally speaking your paper should focus on:

1. A description of the characteristics and function of a physiological system as it operates under “normal” or basal conditions

2. A description of how plasticity augments or how pathology disrupts this normal physiological operation/regulation, and

3. A description of how other body systems are affected by the changes in the system(s) you have described in 1 and 2, above. This serves to emphasize the integrative nature of physiology.

An excellent paper, in addition to covering these topics, should address how the pathology is corrected or how the plastic response might revert to original form and function.

Formatting:
The paper should be divided into 3 sections: Abstract – a 250 word summary of your paper, including concise descriptions of background information, your thesis, and the discussion.

Introduction/Backgrounda section of your paper dedicated to presenting the “story.” This section should contain enough adequate background information about the physiological system to capture the reader’s interest in the system (and in your paper) and should ultimately provide justification for and an explicit statement of your thesis.

Discussion – this is the heart of your paper. In the discussion section you should really be focused on the support for your thesis from the literature, and any implications your thesis might have. This section, more than any other, is an opportunity for you to creatively make an argument about the impact of your pathology/plasticity on human function as described by your thesis.

Literature cited – should contain citation information for each of your 10 sources from the peer-reviewed literature, cited in the format used in the American Journal of Physiology. Details can be found here: http://www.the-aps.org/mm/Publications/Info-For-Authors/Composition/Example-References.html, and an example is as follows:

Eme J, Altimiras J, Hicks JW, Crossley II DA. Hypoxic alligator embryos: Chronic hypoxia, catecholamine levels and autonomic responses of in ovo alligators. Comp Biochem Physiol A Mol Integr Physiol 160: 412–420, 2011.

It us up to you to determine how you would like to distribute information regarding the three foci of your paper (from the top of this document) into the background and discussion sections. An excellent paper will do so in the most logical progression as determined by your thesis.

Your paper should also be 6–8 pages, 1.5 spaced, in 12 point Times New Roman. It may contain no more than two figures if you feel these figures are critical to understanding your arguments. If figures are included, proper figure legends should be placed directly below them, describing their importance and containing citation information. Space dedicated to figures does not contribute to your final page count.

All in-text citations should appear as “(Author, year),” “(Author and author, year),” or “(Authors et al, year).”
